University Essay
Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?
“Non-vegetarians are killers” was the typical comment that I heard in my childhood from my family and other relations. By the time I was in class 8th or 9th, I came across multi-cultural peers belonging to different countries calling Indians as “fussy food eaters.” Such diametrically opposite views disturbed me a lot because these people showed no sign of penitence for killing animals to make their food.
However, being an artist and lover of nature, I felt impelled to verify my beliefs and looked into the matter deeply to find a cogent answer. As I delved into it, I realized that forces of nature take their own course. It’s by laws of nature that animals fall into different food categories like herbivores, omnivores, insectivores and carnivores etc. These groups show a fascinating cycle of food chain where one grouping of animals survives on the other with some animals also eating plants. Something quite similar to what we studied in science that one type of bacteria eats another. This phenomenon is natural; it can’t be changed and has to be understood correctly.
No doubt, out of all species man is the only mortal who is endowed with intellect and wisdom. Intellect and wisdom come with a sense of responsibility and fairness. What dawned on me by the laws of nature was that survival was the key to existence or else existence would not be possible. If some people are vegetarians, they are by choice but they still have to take the blame for killing as plants and vegetables also have life. People living in Antarctica would probably die if they turn vegans. Some vegetarians might suffer from vitamin B 12 deficiency and to make for the loss they have to take the injection which is derived from animals. Yogurt has lots of bacteria and it is a staple of vegetarians’ diet. When we get sick we take antibiotics to kill bacterium which is also a killing. While we breathe, we kill lots of bugs and if we stop breathing, we will kill ourselves!
All in all, now I am of the view that killing is somewhat a means to sustain life. Probably life without death will be in jeopardy. Eating non-vegetarian food should in no way be linked to any exaggerated sense of guilt. Notwithstanding, whenever possible, vegetarian food should be our priority since it is good for our mind and overall health.
